This is a very early Type-1-1 .257 Roberts standard rifle made in 1936. The serial number is 764. The under-barrel stamp shows 1935 barrel production. Based on the serial number, polishing room records indicate this rifle left the factory in 1936. The rifle is in NRA very good (stock) to excellent (metal) condition, and appears to be all original finishes. With just 2% of pre-64 model 70 rifles chambered .257 Roberts, combined with the very low serial number, this rifle is very scarce and highly collectible.
All parts are correct for a Type-1-1 rifle, including the square magazine latch button and the lack of a retaining pin on the safety lever. All parts are also correct for the .257 chambering. The bluing is original and approximately 95%, with the exception of the bolt handle which appears to have been slightly contoured for a scope and reblued. The metal is in excellent condition with no noteworthy blemishes. The rifle is fitted with a period-correct Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight, for which the stock is factory inletted. All numbers match in the receiver sight. The correct Lyman 12S rear sight slot blank and Lyman 31 front sight are present. The receiver bridge has a single drilled and tapped hole. The barrel bore is in very good condition, but there is some erosion in the throat area, which is so common for these rifles. The stock has many handling marks, but is otherwise undamaged. There are no cracks, stains, gouges or other problems. The checkering remains crisp and the finish appears original. The stock has not been cut and the original steel buttplate is present, but the bluing has a grayish brown patina.
