Winchester developed the .338 WM cartridge in 1958, being tailor-made for use in the model 70. In mid-1959, Winchester introduced the .338 chambering for the model 70 with a new and unique 25\" barrel, announcing it to the world in mid-year flier that designated the rifle an “Alaskan” model. Other than the new chambering and the 25\" barrel, there was nothing unique about this new \"Alaskan\" model to distinguish it from any other Sporter rifle. When the 1960 catalog came out, the term \"Alaskan\" was also applied to the only other 25\" barrel model 70 - the .375 H\u0026amp;H. Eventually, in 1963, the .300 WM chambering was introduced and also given the \"Alaskan\" designation, completing this unique subset of model 70 rifles. Students of the model 70 have debated for years exactly what the \"Alaskan\" designation means - whether it was tied to the unique barrel lengths (magnums at 24\"-25\"), or for something else. One thing is certain, Winchester was looking to make money: the Alaskan designation came with a $10 price increase for the .375 in 1960 and $10 higher pricing for the .338 WM and .300 WM, even though there was no real distinguishing features to these rifles beyond the barrel length and chambering. Whatever Winchester's thinking at the time, it has created a uniquely sought after group of rifles which carry the special moniker \"The Alaskans\". Roger Rule covers this topic in some additional detail on page 231 of his superb book.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis .338 Win Mag \"Alaskan\" Sporter rifle (serial number 401400) was produced in 1959 (see note on early short magnum production years below). The rifle is in NRA very good condition. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe original bluing is very good at 98%+ with the only notable wear being on the bolt handle and bottom metal. There is some very light freckling on the barrel bluing, but no scratches, gouges, pits or other problems with the metal or finish. The bore is bright with strong rifling. There are a few very minor scuffs on the stock, which has been refinished. There are no cracks or stains. The checkering is appears to have been lightly recut. The stock is bedded at the recoil lug as well as the first inch of the barrel channel - this appears to have been professionally done without modifying the inletting or barrel channel. The original Winchester recoil pad is intact and is not hard or cracked, but has a small circular blemish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eProduction year info: Like many of the first \"short magnum\" rifles built, the serial number on this receiver dates it earlier than the year it left the factory. This rifle is all factory correct with a \".458\" short magnum receiver, which was not offered by Winchester until mid-1959. Despite this, the receiver serial number indicates a 1957 production date. Just 1,971 National Match rifles were produced, second in rarity only to the Super Grade Featherweight. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe National Match was born out of Winchester's desire to create a lightweight target rifle. The NM rifle is built on a target rifle action (stripper clip slot and the \u003cspan\u003e\"T\" stamped target trigger), mated to a special\u003c\/span\u003e 24\" sporter-profile barrel, and all of it tucked into a tailored target stock. The barrel differs from a standard sporter in that it is drilled for the target rifle scope block, and has a unique low-profile sight ramp which is not slotted for a sight hood. The stock differs from a standard target stock in that it is uniquely inletted for the sporter barrel profile.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis particular rifle retains its factory finishes on both the stock metal and grades in NRA very good to excellent condition. The metal finishes are excellent throughout, with bluing grading at better than 97% and no noteworthy blemishes. The barrel has a dark factory blued finish with virtually no blemishes or wear. The bottom metal shows light thinning of the bluing, but no metal damage and n noteworthy finish blemishes. The receiver has bridge mounts for scope bases and a deep factory satin finish with only a hint of edge wear. The action and bore are in excellent condition and grade as mechanically excellent. The rifle includes the \"T\" stamped target trigger, rear sight slot blank, and special front globe sight mounting block - all correct for the National Match rifle. The bolt is correct to the action, with serial number present and matched to the receiver. The stock is an exceptional piece of American walnut with an outstanding figure on the buttstock. It has has handling marks throughout, but no chips or cracks. The factory buttplate remains, and the angle of the butt has been matched to the model 70 field rifles, rather than the target rifle. There is a small scuff on the left, rear side of the receiver, and a hint of thinning on the top of the barrel, just forward of the stock. These are both just very slight imperfections on a truly spectacular example of this scarce and highly collectible model 70. The bore of the 24\" barrel is bright with strong rifling and would support an argument this rifle seen very little use. The action is tight with no issues or visible wear. The rifle was eventually passed on to a son who was otherwise not a gun owner, but who realized the unique newness and provenance of this rifle made it something very special.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rifle is just about perfect. It is 100% original and is in factory-new condition with two exceptions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003col\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThere is a very small\/shallow pressure mark (about 1\/4\" by 1\/4\" and 1\/32\" deep) on the left side of the stock below the Winchester logo on the receiver. This dent has not broken the wood or the finish, but is noticeable when viewed with the light at the right angle.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eThere is a very small rust spot (about 1\/16\" by 1\/16\") just behind the sight ramp on the left side of the barrel.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ol\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo attempt has been made to remedy or reduce either of these spots. The former is barely visible in the photos. The checkering remains well defined with no major blemishes, and is somewhat smoothed from handling. The bluing of the factory steel buttplate is beginning to show a brown patina. The original Winchester bluing of the rifle is about 90%-95%, with some edge wear and a few light blemishes from honest use. There is small area of cold blue on the barrel in the shank area and some light scratches near the barrel, but no large rubs or major defects. T\u003cspan\u003ehe barrel date stamp is 1932, which makes it carry-over production from the model 54 - an oddity of Winchester production, but is 100% correct for this year of .22 Hornet.\u003c\/span\u003e The bore of the 24\" CMS steel barrel is bright with strong rifling. \u003cspan\u003eThere are two plugged D\u0026amp;T holes in the rear bridge which are spaced correctly for a Weaver mount. These are hidden under the receiver sight aperture arm. The floor plate has edge wear and few light scratches in the finish. The inner magazine box has a slight deformation but feeds cartridges fine. The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver and the rifle is mechanically perfect with no evident problems. All correct .250-3000 Savage parts are present, including the #7 magazine box and the proper extractor ring.
