The receiver and bolt are both marked with serial number 393093. The rifle has been customized with the addition of a Griffin and Howe side-mount detachable scope base; it currently holds a Weaver K1.5 scope.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"352\" data-end=\"671\"\u003eThe African was introduced in 1956 as the exclusive platform for the new .458 Winchester Magnum cartridge, designed specifically for dangerous-game hunting. Only 1,226 Model 70 Africans were produced, making it the third-rarest pre-64 Model 70 chambering (rarer still are the .300 Savage and .35 Remington).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"722\"\u003eDistinguishing features of the African include: 25\" #2 contour barrel with barrel-mounted sling swivel base; unique express sights; superior-grade walnut stock with Monte Carlo profile and extra figure; a barrel mounted recoil block; and offered only in a Super Grade–style configuration\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1169\"\u003eThis particular African has been further customized, elevating it beyond even the factory rarity. Aside from the G\u0026amp;H scope mount, customizations include a checkered bolt handle and a jeweled magazine follower and extractor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1169\"\u003eThe stock is not original to this rifle. It started out as a stock for an H\u0026amp;H magnum rifle and was modified for this African. The forward sling swivel attachment was no longer needed due to the barrel band sling swivel so the attachment location was filled. Crossbolts were added for additional strength, as were used on all but the earliest Africans. The stock was relieved in the barrel channel for the forward recoil block. Since the H\u0026amp;H magnum rifles have a longer magazine box that the \"short magnum\" rifles, the opening for the magazine box is longer than required. In addition, there was a small chip in the bolt handle slot that was repaired. The stock, and the crossbolts, have just a few very shallow scratches.  There are no deep gouges or other damage. The checkering is generally clean and crisp. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1872\"\u003eThe metal is in excellent condition with very minimal wear and no significant dings, scratches, rust, or other damage. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1872\"\u003eBore: 25\" barrel bore is in excellent condition, rated 9\/10 under borescope inspection, with minimal wear or pitting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-start=\"2049\" data-end=\"2221\"\u003eThe scope is a Weaver K1.5-1 Micro Trac with a post-and-crosshair reticle. The adjustments move freely. The finish is in excellent condition, and the glass is exceptionally clear. The G\u0026amp;H mount allows for the quick removal and reinstallation of the scope without losing zero.
