This rifle is in the exact configuration of a Van Orden sniper rifle, and we believe it is one, but we can't prove it. The serial number does not appear in the papers Chandler & Chandler were able to salvage from Evaluator's Ltd - an admittedly incomplete list of Van Orden rifles - leaving us to base our conclusions on inspection of the rifle itself.
Here is what we know:
- The configuration is exactly right for a Van Orden sniper rifle, including the uncheckered straight comb stock with a linseed oil finish rather than the usual Winchester lacquer acetate finish applied.
- The rifle is in pristine / unused condition with no "US PROPERTY" marking, indicating it was never in military hands.
- The serial number, while not documented in Chandler & Chandler, falls within the block of documented Van Orden rifles, and within 100 units of another sniper rifle (268722) which was delivered a civilian buyer in August of 1954.
Had we been able to authenticate this rifle with documentation, the condition and this desirable sniper configuration would result in a price double what we are asking. Without the documentation, this rifle is a steal for anyone who has been searching for a nice Van Orden. Additional records have turned up from time to time, so it is possible this rifle will one day be definitively authenticated, but for now we can only surmise it is a genuine Van Orden and our pricing reflects this uncertainty.
About the rifle:
This rifle has been well cared for and frankly has never seen much use. The factory metal finishes are nearly perfect and there are no notable blemishes or other problems. There are minor marks on the receiver ring and on the right side of the receiver bridge from previously mounted sights. There are slight action wear marks on the bolt rails and in the tang area. The bottom metal is in very good condition with only some slight handling wear.
The bore is in excellent condition, rating a 9 out of 10. The is very little wear and no noted pitting. Borescope verified.
The stock is in excellent condition with a boiled linseed oil finish that has darkened from age. There are no splits, cracks, chips, gouges, or repairs. There are two or three very small handling marks which do not distract from this otherwise perfect condition rifle.
