This is a gorgeous, hard-to-find National Match rifle made in 1955. The National Match is one of the rarest model 70 configurations ever made. Just 1,971 were produced, second in rarity only to the Super Grade Featherweight. This one is serial marked 352702, indicating a 1955 manufacture date.
The National Match was born out of Winchester's desire to create a lightweight target rifle. The NM rifle is built on a target rifle action with stripper clip slot, mated to a special 24" sporter-profile barrel, and all of it tucked into a tailored marksman-style stock. The barrel differs from a standard sporter in that it is drilled for the target rifle scope block and has a unique low-profile sight ramp which is not slotted for a sight hood and no dovetail for the rear sight. The stock differs from a standard target stock in that it is uniquely inletted for the sporter barrel profile.
This rifle is fitted with a Lyman 48 receiver sight with a 105-point elevation slide, and Redfield front globe sight.
All the metal is in original finishes and grades 95+% with no noteworthy blemishes or other problems. This action does not have a T-stamped target trigger. This barrel on this rifle is in phenomenal shape. It appears nearly unfired, with no visible wear and no notable pitting. We give it a 9.5 out of 10. Boroscope verified.
The stock is in very good condition. It appears to have had an additional coat of finish applied on top of the factory finish, and is slightly smoother than the factory-finish. It has no splits, cracks, stains or notable blemishes. The stock has not been bedded, shortened or otherwise modified. It retains its original steel buttplate. One notable feature is that a filler has been added to the area under the receiver sight, likely to accomodate the 105-point slide. Please see photos.
All parts appear correct and original to the rifle, with the exception of the front and rear sights. The bolt is correct to the action, with serial number matched to the receiver.
