This is a .243 Winchester Varmint rifle produced in 1957 with all factory-original finishes. The varmint rifle configuration was produced from 1955-1963. It has the 26" medium-heavy stainless-steel barrel mated to a sporter style stock.
The metal is in very good condition. The factory “iron plate” bluing of the stainless barrel has some light wear and fading, and a few very small, discolored spots on the muzzle. There is very little edge wear on the receiver and the bottom metal has some light scratches, edge wear, and faint freckling. There is light bluing wear on the guide areas of the receiver where the bolt lugs contact the guides. The bolt handle is worn, freckled, and discolored.
The bore of the 26" stainless barrel has some throat wear and heat crackling near the chamber, but the rest of the bore is outstanding, with sharp rifling and no pitting. We grade the bore an 7 out of 10.
All parts appear original and correct for the rifle. The bolt is correct and serial number matched to the receiver. There are no sights, sight blocks, or scope blocks installed.
The stock retains its factory finish in excellent condition with very few handling marks, and no cracks, splits, or other damage or modifications. The checkering is in very good condition. The stock has not been shortened or otherwise modified and retains its original steel buttplate. The buttplate has been re-blued. 1" sling swivels are installed.
