This is a standard rifle chambered in .250-3000 Savage, produced in 1954. The rifle retains the original factory finishes and has no added holes or other modifications. It grades in NRA excellent (like new) condition.
Winchester listed the 250-3000 Savage chambering in catalogs from 1936 until 1949, but actually produced them through 1954. Only a total of 2,750 model 70's were produced in the 250-3000 chambering, making this one of the rarer rifles. In 1954 Winchester "cleaned up" it's barrel inventories by producing rifles with surplus barrels from discontinued offerings. More information about this can be found in Roger Rule's excellent book "The Rifleman's Rifle", on pages 101 and 217. This rifle is one produced during this clean up period. The receiver and bolt and both marked with serial number 298752, indicating a 1954 manufacturing date, but the barrel is marked 1949, the last year the 250-3000 was catalogued. This rifle is original in all respects and is in near perfect condition.
The stock is original in all respects and is in "factory new" condition. The original steel butt plate and the checkering are also in near perfect condition.
The original bluing is in near-perfect condition, rating at 98+%. There are a very few, very shallow scratches, certainly less than to be expected for a 70 year old rifle, even one that never left the gun safe.
The bore of the 24" barrel has no throat wear or pitting; the only indication that it has been fired is a slight amount of copper in the bore. We rate it a 10 out of 10. Borescope verified.
