This is a very rare 1940 carbine (20" barrel) chambered in .257 Roberts. Winchester only made 7,197 carbines and the vast majority were chambered in .30-06 and .270.  This .257 Roberts carbine is a scarce chambering in what is already a very small number of rifles produced - exact numbers are not available, but it is estimated as few as 148 carbines chambered in .257 Roberts were produced.  The rarity of carbines is compounded by the fact a large number of these compact rifles were delivered to prisons, police forces, and military units worldwide and never ended up in private ownership.

The stock is in good condition with no cracks, stains, gouges, or other major damage.  It does have extensive handling marks in the form of small nicks and dings from more than 80 years of use.  The checking is original with a few minor dents but otherwise in good condition.  The stock is unmodified and retains its original steel buttplate, which is missing most of its bluing. The stock finish appears to be original, showing finish loss in a few areas from wear.

The original bluing grades at 90% with light edge wear, a few rubs, and some slight freckling on the front sight hood.  The receiver has been professionally modified in the form of a patch installed on the rear bridge to replace a section that had been drilled for scope bases. It appears a small section of the rear bridge was milled out and a new piece installed from a donor rifle. This appears to be the only modification to the rifle.

The barrel has notable wear and hear cracking in the throat and some shallow pitting near the muzzle.

The bolt is serial matched to the receiver and all other parts appear to be original to the rifle.
