This is a rare 1942 model 70 carbine (20" barrel) chambered in .270 Winchester (.270 W.F.C.). Winchester only made 7,197 carbines total in all years of production and only produced 7,452 rifles in all chamberings in 1942 making this a rare combination of year and chambering. This particular rifle appears to have been well used, but not abused. The bolt is serial matched to the receiver and all other parts appear to be original to the rifle. The receiver has been drilled for scope mounts; the rear bridge has three holes.
The stock is in good condition with no cracks, stains, gouges, or other major damage. It has extensive handling marks in the form of small nicks and dings from more than 80 years of use. The checkering is original with a few minor dents and a large portion of the points have become flattened over time. The stock has been notched for the use of the Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight. The stock is otherwise unmodified and retains its original steel buttplate, which is missing most of its bluing.
The original bluing grades at 80% with edge wear, a few rubs, and freckling. There is some notable pitting, freckling and discoloration under the stock, but no other significant metal damage.
The barrel has notable wear and heat cracking in the throat and some scattered pitting resulting in a rating of 6 out of 10 under borescope examination.
