This is a gorgeous, hard-to-find National Match rifle made in 1953. The National Match is one of the rarest model 70 configurations ever made. Just 1,971 were produced, second in rarity only to the Super Grade Featherweight. This one is serial marked 267101, indicating a 1953 manufacture date.
The National Match was born out of Winchester's desire to create a lightweight target rifle. The NM rifle is built on a target rifle action (stripper clip slot), mated to a special 24" sporter-profile barrel, and all of it tucked into a tailored target stock. The barrel differs from a standard sporter in that it is drilled for the target rifle scope block and has a unique low-profile sight ramp which is not slotted for a sight hood and no dovetail for the rear sight. The stock differs from a standard target stock in that it is uniquely inletted for the sporter barrel profile.
This rifle is fitted with a Lyman 48 WH receiver sight with a 60-point elevation slide, and a front globe sight.
All the metal is in original finishes and grades 95+%, near perfect condition. The bottom metal has a few shallow scratches and very light freckling; the bolt handle has some discoloration and a small scratch, and there are light marks from a mounted scope block. There is no noteworthy edgewear, fading, or other blemishes.
If it wasn't for the presence of some copper in the bore, we might think the rifle was unfired. There is no notable wear or pitting. We rate this bore a 9 out of 10. Boroscope verified.
The stock is in beautiful condition, showing no splits, cracks, stains or notable blemishes. It has not been bedded, shortened or otherwise modified, and retains its original steel buttplate. Only a few very minor handling marks and one shallow ding separate this stock from being truly perfect.
All parts appear correct and original to the rifle, and the bolt is serial number matched to the receiver.
