.30-40 Krag (.30 U.S.) Standard Rifle - 1938

More than a decade before the .30 Gov't '06 round was adapted by the US military, and even before the adoption of the .30-03, the military adopted a new small bore round called the .30 -40 Krag (also called the .30 Army or .30 U.S.). This was a major advancement from the previous military round, the .45-70.

A rimmed cartridge designed for lever action rifles; Winchester never offered the 30-40 Krag as a chambering for the model 70. But for a few fans of this cartridge, they didn't let Winchester's exclusion of the 30-40 Krag in the model 70 lineup stop them. This rifle is a testament to one man's enduring loyalty in 1938 to a cartridge already 46 years old and technologically eclipsed by other 30 caliber rounds. The rifle is also a testament to Winchester's willingness to accept special-orders and chamber the model 70 in nearly any cartridge a customer requested. To chamber the model 70 in a rimmed cartridge required a special flat-breech barrel, unique extractor and other tailored action parts, all of which were produced in the Winchester custom shop. It is unknown how many model 70s were special ordered in this chambering, but it is a vanishingly small fraction of model 70 production, making this rifle exceedingly rare.

Manufactured in 1938, this rifle is in NRA very good, approaching excellent condition.

The metal is in very good to excellent condition with original factory bluing, no notable blemishes and very little bluing wear. The bottom metal has notable edge wear, along with some wear on the bolt handle and muzzle crown, but overall the metal is in remarkable condition.

The receiver is fitted with an original Lyman 48 receiver sight and the bridge has not been drilled.

The stock is original to the rifle and appears to retain its original finish, but the sheen indicates it may have been rubbed out or overcoated at some point. There are a few light dings and scratches in the sock, but no repairs, splits, cracks or other notable damage. The stock retains its original steel buttplate, which shows some bluing wear and very light freckling, but no pitting or notable defects. 

The bore of the 24" barrel is in excellent condition. There is some very minor scattered pitting and no notable wear in the throat or the muzzle. It grades at 8 out of 10 under borescope examination.

All parts on this rifle appear to be original with no evidence of modification. The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver.
