This is a .300 H&H Magnum Bull rifle produced in 1948. The rifle presents in all factory-original finishes and grades in NRA very good condition.

This is a transition rifle made in 1948 and features a nice set of transition features, including:

  • Coverleaf tang receiver
  • Smooth undrilled type-II receiver bridge
  • Transition style "rabbit's paw" safety

Another unique feature of this rifle is the mix of factory parts.  Built with the rare 28" bull barrel contour and built right after the production break caused by the war, this rifle probably should be considered a "clean up" gun.  As we see in other rifles from this period with uncommon barrels, the barrel manufacture date predates the rifle build by several years.  In this case, the barrel is 1942 production and the rifle was assembled in 1948.  This has resulted in one additional odd feature of this particular rifle and that is the Carbonia rust-blued barrel on a post-war rifle.

The action has the "T" marked trigger and shows no notable wear. The bolt is correct and serial number matched to the receiver. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman 48 WH 60-point receiver sight. This is paired with a Lyman 77 front globe sight, both of which are correct for the year and configuration of the rifle. All parts are correct for the period and chambering of the rifle and appear original to the rifle.

The metal grades in very good condition. The original bluing is 90% with minor edge wear, and slight freckling in a few places. The floor plate and trigger guard show some edge wear from handling and a few scratches. The receiver is unmodified with some minor bluing scratches but no damages.

The bore of the 28" barrel has some wear, heat checking in the first few inches past the chamber and moderate throat erosion. There is also some light scattered pitting.  Not a perfect bore and we have graded it 6 out of 10 under borescope inspection.

The stock retains its factory finish in excellent condition with just a few slight handling marks and no damage.  The stock has not been shortened or otherwise modified and retains its original steel butt plate. The correct 1.25" target swivels are present.  The stock has been expertly bedded in the area of the recoil lug and chamber area of the barrel. The bedding work was expertly done and appears to be from the distant past- probably in the 1950s.
