This rifle came to our shop and was presented to us as a 1955 Featherweight .358 Win - one of the hard-to-find chamberings for the model 70. However, after it arrived, we discovered it had been rechambered to .350 Rem Mag. Worse yet, some internals of the action where not changed to accommodate the belted magnum cartridge, resulting in a rifle which would not feed correctly. We were bitterly disappointed to find it was not even a functioning rifle, let alone an original .358 Win. But the .350 Rem Mag is a sweet cartridge, so we decided to make lemonade out of this lemon. We swapped out the receiver for a 1960 "458" short magnum receiver and added a magnum magazine box with a custom spacer to make the shorter .350 Rem Mag cartridges feed correctly. Now it's a smooth-running hot-rod of a rifle with a ton of knockdown power in a lightweight and compact package.
The rifle is in NRA very good to excellent condition.
The stock is a low-comb Featherweight stock with an aluminum butt plate. The stock has been refinished and is in very good condition with only minor blemishes and handling marks, but no significant stains, cracks, or any other noted problems. Some lightening holes have been added in the belly of the barrel channel to take a few ounces out of the weight of the rifle, otherwise the stock is all original.
The original bluing is beautiful at better than 95% with very light edge wear on the receiver and at the muzzle. The floor plate has slight fading. No notable rubs, tool marks, scratches, or other blemishes are noted. The bore of the 22" barrel is excellent with no evident wear, pits, throat erosion, fouling or other issues. The action has been rebuilt in our shop with the modifications needed to properly feed the short, belted cartridge.
