This is very nice and all original 1956 Featherweight rifle in the hard to find .358 Winchester chambering. The rifle retains original factory finishes in NRA very good to excellent condition.
The stock is in excellent condition with no cracks stains or other blemishes and just minor handling marks. The checkering is crisp. The stock is unmodified and retains its original aluminum buttplate. The stock finish is original. The original bluing is beautiful at 95%. There is light edge wear on the receiver, barrel shank and muzzle. There are no notable scratches or other blemishes. The floor plate has one scratch as seen in the photos. The trigger guard finish has faded and has a gray appearance. The bore of the 22" barrel is good with no notable rifling wear or throat erosion, but there are scattered very light pits. We grade it a 7.5 out of 10 with very little evidence of use, but downgraded for the light pits. The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver and the rifle is mechanically perfect with no evident problems. All correct .358 action parts are present and correct. The correct 22G sight is present with the correct sight elevator. The rifle appears to be 100% original and correct.
This rifle comes to us from a local family collection which has held the rifle since the 1950s. The grandson of the original rifle's owner contacted us on behalf of his uncle who is the current keeper of these rifles and made arrangements for us to meet the family and inspect the collection. We were so pleased and impressed, both with the provenance and also the condition of the rifles. These rifles were used by the family for Washington state deer hunting and were also carefully maintained. Several rifles in the collection were even featured in a magazine, along with the father of the current owner.
The rifle is being sold on consignment along with the balance of the family collection due to forced retirement as a result of COVID-19. Included in the collection are a total of three .358 Winchester Featherweight rifles, as well as some more common chamberings.
