This rifle has a unique combination of three rare and collectable features; the 7mm chambering, very early production, and a carbine configuration. The rifle was produced in 1937 in the third most rare model 70 chambering - 7MM (7x57 Mauser). Just a fraction of a percent of model 70s were chambered in this cartridge. Additionally, this rifle is the much rarer carbine version; Winchester only produced a total of 7,197 carbines in all calibers, and they produced only 9,335 rifles in all chamberings in 1937. The rifle has been modified with the addition of a Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight; this entailed notching the stock underneath the sight. During the very early years of model 70 production, Winchester used some of the remaining inventory of model 54 barrels. The barrels are interchangeable and so some of the early production model 70s had a model 54 barrel. This rifle is one of those, identifiable by the under-barrel stampings, including the date marking of "35". The rifle grades in NRA excellent (refinished) condition.
The metal is in excellent (refinished) condition, no notable blemishes or bluing wear. Under close examination, there are a very few, very light scratches on the bottom metal. The receiver has not been drilled with any additional holes for scope mounts.
The stock is correct for the rifle but has been refinished. There are a two small handling marks and a very small patch of finish loss no repairs, splits, cracks or other notable damage. The stock retains its steel buttplate, which is near perfect.
The bore of the 20" barrel is in excellent condition. The rifling is sharp; there is very minimal wear and no pitting. It grades a 9 out of 10 under borescope examination.
