The National Match is one of the rarest model 70 configurations ever made. Just 1,971 were produced, second in rarity only to the Super Grade Featherweight. The National Match was only produced in the .30-06 cartridge, except for a tiny number which were special ordered in other chamberings. This is one of these rare special order National Match rifles. It is chambered in the already very rare 7M/M and is only made more scarce by its very early 1937 manufacture date.
As a special-order rifle, this one has a few additional oddball features which were a product of someone's imagination when ordering the rifle. Instead of the usual 24" barrel length (which was standard for both the National Match rifle, and for the 7M/M), this rifle has a 26" barrel. The barrel is not drilled for the target rifle scope block and has the standard profile front sight ramp. It may well be the only barrel ever produced with this odd combination of features.
The stock is in beautiful condition, showing no splits, cracks, stains or notable blemishes. It has not been bedded, shortened or otherwise modified, and retains its original steel buttplate. The National Match stock differs from a standard target stock in that it is uniquely inletted for the sporter barrel profile.
All the metal grades 95% with only very minor edge wear, notably on the safety, at the muzzle, and on the steel buttplate. The bore shows absolutely no evidence of having ever been fired but has a very few shallow pits from storage. We rate this bore a 9 out of 10. Borescope verified. The receiver has been professionally repaired in the bridge, which had been drilled for mounting a scope (see photos). This very discreet repair appears to be the only modification to the rifle.
The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver.
