This rifle was acquired out of a collection in Louisiana where the owner believed it to be an authentic Winchester-built rifle. And indeed, it does appear as an authentic Winchester rifle - which would make it quite rare, since it has no sights, nor sight mounting provisions (dovetails / ramp) on the barrel. Winchester offered rifles without sights in the pre-64 years, but only by special order and relatively few were ever produced. And because this rifle is chambered in .257 Roberts (a relatively scarce chambering, representing just 2.6% of model 70 production), a genuine special order sightless example would be a truly rare find. However, after close examination of this rifle, we have determined it was not produced in the Winchester factory, but is a very finely done custom, made to look exactly like a factory rifle.
Although this rifle is a near-perfect replica and very difficult to distinguish from a factory-built rifle, we want to be very clear it is a custom rifle. No doubt, it was produced with the intent to fool a buyer into believing it was a rare rifle produced by Winchester. And indeed, the owner of the collection this rifle came from believed it to be authentic. We are being clear here about its origins to ensure the next buyer knows exactly what they are getting. We have discreetly marked the bottom of the barrel to ensure there will be no doubt about its authenticity.
The barrel is a near perfect duplication of the factory standard barrel with a factory-appearing roll stamp. The balance of the rifle is all correct factory parts for a .257 Roberts Standard rifle with original appearing finishes.
The receiver and bolt are both marked with serial number 286819, indicating a 1954 manufacture date. The rifle is in NRA excellent (near perfect) condition.
The bluing on this rifle grades at 98%, showing almost no wear, the only notable exception being slight wear on the bolt components. There are no dings or other damage to the metal.
The rifle is likely unfired as the bore shows no wear and is rated a 10 out of 10. Borescope verified.
The Monte Carlo stock is in mint condition, without flaws and appears to be the factory finish. The checkering is clean, and crisp without any flat spots or dings, although there is some slight finish loss in some of the checkering. The steel butt plate shows no wear and is in excellent condition.
