This is a rare 1937 model 70 carbine (20" barrel) chambered in .270 Winchester (.270 W.F.C.). Winchester only made 7,197 carbines total in all years of production and only produced 9,335 rifles (in all chamberings) in 1937, making this a rare combination of year and chambering. In addition, this relic is 100% factory original with no discernable modifications ... truly a beautiful and highly desirable collector's piece.
The original bluing on barrel and receiver are at 95%, with a few light cosmetic scratches. There are scuffs on the sight hood, and some thinning of the bluing on the bolt knob. The bottom metal rates about 75%, and the butt plate bluing is worn nearly off. The bolt is serial number matched to the receiver (serial number 2762) and the rear bridge remains undrilled.
The bore of this rifle is excellent, rating a 9/10 with borescope inspection.
The stock retains its original finish in excellent condition. There are no cracks, dents, chips, gouges, or stains. However, there are a few cosmetic scratches -- please see photos. The checkering is well defined and cut at 20 lines per inch.
In pre-war rifles, we look for a number of small details to confirm the authenticity and originality of the rifle parts. These include:
- The trigger guard button is squared off rather than angled
-
The floor plate is marked with a triangle-dash proof mark on the underside
- The barrel is equipped with a Lyman 31W Gold Bead front sight
- The bolt stop release plunger is jumbo size – correct for the very earliest rifles, only found under serial number 10,000.
- The magazine follower spring is stamped with a “1”
We have confirmed all the above details to be correct on this rifle.
