This is a rare 1937 model 70 carbine (20" barrel) chambered in .270 W.C.F. Winchester only made 7,197 carbines total in all years of production, and produced only 9,335 rifles (in all chamberings) in 1937, making this a rare combination of year and chambering. This relic has correct factory configurations and remains in excellent condition... a beautiful collector's piece. The receiver and bolt are serial number matched with 6776.
The metal on this rifle has been largely reblued. We refinished the bottom metal here in the pre64win shop, using rust bluing. The remainder of the metal appears to have been reblued at some point in the past. The receiver and bolt bluing remains in excellent condition with almost no wear; but the barrel contains some dings, rubs and scratches to the finish.
The bore of this rifle is excellent with a small amount of throat wear, earning it a 9 out of 10 rating. Borescope inspected.
The stock retains its factory finish in very good condition. It has light handling marks in the form of surface scratches, dings and scuffs, but no cracks, chips, gouges or structural damage. The extra fine checkering is somewhat flattened from years of handling but carries no notable damage. The steel buttplate has original factory bluing with significant wear to the finish.
Beside being reblued, the only other modification to the rifle is a single hole drilled in the rear bridge for a scope mount. This hole is located beneath the receiver sight - please see pics.
In early pre-war rifles, we look for a number of small details to confirm the authenticity and originality of the rifle parts. These include:
- Triangle-dash proof marks on receiver, barrel, floor plate and trigger guard.
- Jumbo-sized bolt stop release plunger -- correct for rifles with serial number under 10,000
- Barrel equipped with a Lyman 31w Gold Bead front sight
- Magazine follower and spring stamped with a “1”
- Stock checkering cut at 20 lines per inch.
We have confirmed all the above details to be correct on this rifle.
