This a Winchester model 70 rifle chambered in .308 Winchester in the Standard rifle configuration. Winchester only catalogued the .308 Winchester cartridge in the Featherweight configuration, and any factory-built standard rifle in .308 Win is a special-order rifle which came from the Winchester custom shop and is exceedingly rare. The receiver and bolt are both marked with serial number 537386, indicating the receiver was manufactured in late 1961. By 1962 Winchester had transitioned to a slightly different stock (the checkering was different). This rifle appears to have a 1962-1963 stock, meaning it got one of the early 1962-63 stocks, or by the time it made its way through the custom shop, these were the stocks being used.
The bluing on the barrel looks very much like slow rust bluing, instead of the hot caustic bluing used on this year of rifle. As a factory custom rifle, it is possible this bluing was part of the order and applied by the factory. It is also possible this was a later modification. The other parts have been blued by the hot caustic method. The bluing rates at 95% with light edge wear on the bolt components, the muzzle, and the bottom metal. There are a few light scratches in the trigger guard, but no notable dings, rust, or other damage.
With a borescope evaluation of the 24" barrel we can tell the rifle has been fired, but without any throat wear or pitting we rate it as a 10 out of 10.
The Monte Carlo stock is in very good condition with a group of small dings near the loading port and just a few other handling marks. The checkering is clean and crisp without any flat spots or dings. The hard rubber butt plate a few shallow scratches but is otherwise in excellent condition.
