This is .458 Win Mag "African" Super Grade rifle in NRA excellent condition. The .458 Winchester magnum cartridge was developed in late 1955 and chambered in the new African rifle, first shipped in 1956. These rifles were all in the Super grade configuration. The .458 cartridge became the parent case for the .300, .338, and .264 Winchester Magnum cartridges, all introduced in the years immediately following. This rifle was manufactured in 1956.
The original bluing is outstanding at 95%. There is only slight edgewear in a few locations and the metal is in excellent condition. There is a notable spot of copper or brass on the magazine, possibly a factory brazing issue. Please see photos.
The 25" bore is nearly perfect, with no erosion or pitting, and only a slight trace of copper fouling. The rifle appears to only have a few rounds through it. We grade this bore a 9 out of 10 under borescope inspection.
The stock retains its original finish in excellent condition, including the factory original pad, which is in very good condition. The stock shows only very light handling marks but no notable blemishes -- no dents, cracks, gouges, oil stains, or other defects.
All parts are correct for the year and chambering and appear original to the rifle. The jeweled bolt is factory marked with the serial number corresponding to the receiver. The magazine follower, extractor, and the extractor ring are also beautifully jeweled.
