7 M/M (7x57mm Mauser) Standard Tribute Rifle - 1949

This rifle was acquired out of a collection in Wyoming where the owner had developed some concerns regarding its authenticity. Upon bringing it into our shop, under a detailed examination, we were able to confirm that it is not a factory original rifle, but is a very finely done custom, made to look exactly like a factory rifle. Although this rifle is a near-perfect replica and very difficult to distinguish from a factory-built rifle, we want to be very clear it is a custom rifle.  No doubt it was produced with the intent to fool a buyer into believing it was a rare rifle produced by Winchester. And indeed, the owner of the collection this rifle came from believed it to be authentic when he purchased it. We are being clear here about its origins to ensure the next buyer knows exactly what they are getting. We have discreetly marked the bottom of the barrel to ensure there will be no doubt about its authenticity.

Not only is it not a factory original, but based on a few distinguishing characteristics, we think this rifle was made by the same person who made a few other custom rifles we have seen come through the shop. The workmanship on the finishes is excellent, especially the metal, but on a few of the rifles we have found headspace, feeding or extraction issues - the result of some missed tolerances.

This rifle had a headspace issue, which we corrected by setting the shoulder back a full thread and re-cutting the chamber. As result of this, the forearm barrel screw no longer aligns with the barrel escutcheon. We solved this problem by removing the escutcheon and installing a shortened forearm screw; the screw fills the hole in the stock but does not make contact with the barrel. Visually, this fix is not noticeable unless the stock is removed, but it does allow for full floating of the barrel; in fact, many times we make this change to improve the accuracy of a custom rifle. Setting the shoulder back also slightly changes the fit of the barrel in the stock; there is a slight gap on the forward side of the barrel rear sight boss.

The receiver and bolt are both marked with serial number 118397, indicating a 1949 manufacture date. The rifle is in NRA excellent (refinished) condition.

The rifle is possibly unfired as the bore shows no wear, no damage, and no copper fouling. We rate it a 10 out of 10. Borescope verified.

The barrel is a near perfect duplication of the factory standard barrel with a factory-appearing roll stamp. The balance of the rifle is all correct factory parts for a 7 M/M Standard rifle. 

This rifle was probably completely re-blued when it was customized, and the finishes are near perfect. The bluing on this rifle grades at 98%, showing almost no wear. The rear sight and the bolt sleeve have a slight purplish coloration. Aside from two very small dings above the logo, and two pin-head sized marks on the trigger guard, there are no other notable dings or other damage to the metal. 

The Monte Carlo stock is in excellent condition. Aside from a few light handling marks, it is without flaws. The checkering is exceptionally clean and crisp, without any flat spots or dings.  The steel butt plate shows no wear and is in excellent condition.
